The village of Plataniotissa, 30 km northwest of Kalavrita (Region Unit of Achaea, Peloponnese), is one of the most idiosyncratic and special pilgrimages of Greece, Panagia Plataniotissa, from which the village took its name. It is a very small church dedicated to the Birth of the Virgin Mary, which has been formed in the cavity of a huge century-old plane tree. The tree has a perimeter of about 17 m at the base and a height of 25 m. The time of the foundation of the church is not known, according to the tradition its history is connected with the Monastery of Mega Spilaio and the icon of Panagia Megalospilaiotissa.
