The wetland of Aliki is located two kilometers east of the city of Aigio in Achaea (Peloponnese). It is a small closed lagoon of 180 acres, fed by rainwater and much of it dries in the summer. Today Aliki is a wetland with a disproportionately large value, in relation to its size, that gathers a large number of migratory birds. More than 235 species have been observed. Bird watching is especially popular, especially in winter.
Aliki brings together all the main characteristics of a typical wetland. Reeds and other shrubs provide shelter to thousands of migratory birds each year. Among them are various groups of aquatics and watefowl birds, such as swans and phoenixes, the well-known and beloved flamingo-phoenicopterus ruber. This diversity is the greatest among the wetlands of the Peloponnese. The wetland is a Natura-2000 area recognized throughout Europe with official status protection.
