The Cave of the Lakes, formerly called Troupisio, is located at an altitude of 827 meters and is 17 km away from Kalavrita and 9 km from Klitoria (Achaea, Peloponnese) . The natural entrance to the cave is spacious (3.50 m high and 6.50 m wide). It has a serpentine shape and its total length is about 2 km. Lakes in the interior of a cave is not something common, neither global nor for Greece, where it is a unique geological phenomenon.
The first autopsies of archaeologists in the cave were carried out in 1967 and 1971. The collection of ancient shells, from a random excavation outside and a limited excavation inside, gave the first samples of Neolithic and Early Helladic pottery.
The period of 1992-1994 the excavation brought to light anthropological and archaeological findings, which prove that the cave was inhabited for long periods of time, with the first indications dated in the 6th millennium BC.
